Filmo-Protect Complex: It's Doing What Our Kids' Skin Can't Do Yet

Most children's skincare is formulated with good intentions, but also partly knowledge about adult skin biology. That sounds like a small oversight, but the science suggests otherwise.
The truth is that children's skin is not simply a miniature version of adult skin. It operates differently, responds to ingredients differently, and has needs that most products were never designed to address. Understanding the difference starts with one thing most of us never thought about: sebum.
Adult skin has a built-in system that gets less credit than it deserves. Every day, our sebaceous glands produce sebum, which is a waxy, lipid-rich coating that seals in moisture, buffers against environmental aggressors, and keeps our skin barrier functioning as it should.
However, children's skin do not have this system yet. Their sebaceous glands are largely dormant until puberty, which means the skin's sebum layer is simply absent during childhood. In 2011, TOOFRUIT partnered with Professor Philippe Humbert's team at Besançon Hospital in France to conduct what was the first scientific study of its kind on children's skin. The findings were significant: children's skin does not produce sebum, and as a result is 10 times drier than adult skin. This is supported by broader dermatological research by the Experimental Dermatology Journal, which found that children's skin has a thinner stratum corneum (outermost layer of the epidermis), lower ceramide levels, and reduced free fatty acids compared to adult skin. All of this can contribute to higher rates of transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and greater vulnerability to dryness.
TOOFRUIT kickstarted their research with a question most brands had not thought to ask: What is actually different about children's skin?
Learning about the lack of sebum production in children's skin motivated the creation of the Filmo-Protect Complex, a 100% natural blend of three plant-based ingredients that moisturise while forming a film to keep that moisture in. Each ingredient was chosen because its composition supports what the skin needs when that sebum layer is absent. Instead of sinking into the skin, they come together to form a breathable, protective shield on the surface of the skin that works alongside the existing barrier to help reduce TEWL and support the moisture balance that children's skin otherwise cannot sustain on its own.
TOOFRUIT put their innovation to the test and found that kids' skin that was protected with the Filmo-Protect Complex showed 47% increased protection compared to unprotected skin over a 24-hour period.
Olive wax is derived from the olive plant and shares much of the same bioactive richness that has made olive-derived ingredients a staple of skincare for centuries.
Raspberry seed oil is a less commonly discussed oil, but it is exceptionally rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (they account for over 85% of its fatty acid content!) Research has shown that omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids play an essential role in both the structural integrity and barrier function of skin, as well as in moderating the skin's inflammatory response. Skin that is deficient in essential fatty acids breaks down more easily, reacts more readily, and recovers more slowly. These fatty acids are ones our bodies cannot produce on its own. When well-formulated, topical application can be an effective option for delicate children skin.
Raspberry seed oil also has high tocopherol content, which gives it meaningful antioxidant activity, and this matters for children's skin that is still developing its defences against oxidative environmental stress.
The active compound in coconut oil is lauric acid, a medium-chain fatty acid that makes up the majority of the oil's composition. Unlike heavier oils that sit on the surface of the skin, lauric acid can actually integrate into the stratum corneum, strengthening the lipid matrix and helping reduce TEWL. When formulated into the Filmo-Protect Complex, coconut oil functions as a barrier-supporting ingredient and a moisturising foundation that everything else is built on, rather than a heavy topical oil.
Most skincare products for children focus on adding or locking in moisture, which are both valid goals, but they only address part of the picture. The deeper issue is that children's skin has no sebum layer to help preserve the hydration it does have. Every bath, every air-conditioned room, every outdoor hour in Singapore's humidity followed by a cool indoor environment, all of this draws moisture out of skin that cannot reseal itself the way adult skin can.
The Filmo-Protect Complex works to remedy that. Instead of just delivering hydration into the skin, it takes it one step further and maintains hydration levels by forming the lipid film that children's skin is not yet equipped to produce. Within the TOOFRUIT range, the inclusion of the Filmo-Protect complex extends beyond its moisturiser formulas. Regardless of which product it is present in, the complex serves the unique function of supporting the skin with the protective layer it is missing, so that hydration isn't constantly fighting to stay where it belongs.

The Filmo-Protect Complex is not a standard, typical ingredient you'll find listed on shelves or replicated elsewhere. It was developed specifically by TOOFRUIT, in direct response to what their research showed about children's skin, and it remains exclusive to their range.
If your child or a child you know has skin that reacts easily, dries out quickly, or struggles to hold onto moisture through the day, that might not be a coincidence. It could point to this biology gap between adult and children skin that most kids' skincare are not designed around.
